One good advantage of this method is that if something happens to your PC, there’s no need for you to re-install all the programs. The setup files can already be included in the compressed backed up drive. All you need to do is to run the hard drive backup program and decompress the drive. It’s as if nothing has really happened to your PC.

Of course, we can’t forget to talk about its downsides, which are few. First, it’s not really easy to compress and copy files in your hard drive backup program. It will take you a while, even hours, before you can complete the entire process. You can hardly do anything in your computer since it will definitely slow down all of your activities. Moreover, not all storage devices are capable of running together with the hard drive backup software. You can’t even contain all of them in one CD.

Another method is known as archiving. This is more time-consuming than the former, but this will provide you a failsafe strategy just in case the storage media you used or the entire hard drive imaging process goes haywire. All you need are more CDs or a file backup software that can hold multiple files. You can upload folders or installers into them. Archiving can be done daily, so it doesn’t eat up a lot of your time. You may also want to accomplish it during your free time.

A subcategory of archiving is the incremental backup, and you may have to use an incremental backup software for this. Rather than uploading all the files, you are only going to back up those that have been modified.
